Physical Education

The subject leader for PE & Sport is Mrs Brookwood.

At The Mount, we aim to inspire every child to develop a passion for Physical Education and sport, placing PE as an important part of school life. Through high-quality PE and sporting opportunities, we aim to equip all pupils with the essential physical, social and personal skills they need to succeed, which build on our core values of reason, resilience and respect. A love of physical activity is fostered in Early Years where children partake in range of physical activities, including:  PE and dance lessons, bike riding, active outdoor provision and other organised, active games.  We support children to progress with confidence and competence throughout their school journey and beyond, embedding key sporting values that can be applied positively in everyday life. Central to our approach is the promotion of both physical and mental wellbeing, inspiring children to adopt healthy, active lifestyles that continue into adulthood.

PE at The Mount focuses on developing strong fundamental movement skills so that children become motor competent and physically confident. Pupils of all abilities are given access to high-quality, inclusive PE that enables them to achieve their full potential. Lessons are carefully planned to be fun, safe and engaging, ensuring every child feels supported and valued. Our ultimate aim is to foster a lifelong love of physical activity and sport.

PE lessons take pupils on an exciting and progressive learning journey from Early Years through to Key Stage 2, ensuring the mastery of key skills over time. Inclusion is at the core of our provision, with the clear message that PE is for everyone. Through PE and sport, children actively learn and live important values such as teamwork, resilience and respect, while being inspired and challenged regardless of their starting point or ability.

We also place a strong emphasis on leadership, developing confident young leaders through PE lessons and structured leadership opportunities. Children are educated about physical and mental wellbeing and the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. Strong links with local sports clubs, partnerships and community organisations further enhance our provision, giving pupils opportunities to pursue interests beyond school. PE also supports cross-curricular learning, using physical, fun and engaging lessons to enrich children’s wider educational experience.

All teachers have worked alongside qualified coaches in order to improve their own ability to deliver high-quality games teaching.   Pupils in Year 5 go swimming weekly.

The Mount participates in regular inter-schools competitions via our local pyramid of schools. Individual and team 'winners' of tournaments have the opportunity to progress to wider local, county and national levels.  To increase involvement in physical activity,  personal challenge, and experience of competing against others The Mount also holds termly intra-school, Key Stage and whole school competitions.  Once a week, children take part in the weekly mile, aiming to improve their stamina and obtain new personal bests.

Sports Leaders, who have gained confidence in both their sporting ability and leadership skills throughout their time at The Mount, are given the opportunity to apply to be Sports Leaders.  Successful candidates are then trained to deliver sports activities at lunchtimes.  The vital role they play during our school Sports Fortnight, and the work they do at playtimes, ensures that sports leaders are role models and  that they help inspire and encourage children to be physically activity

During summer term, we run ‘Sports Fortnight’. Pupils try new sports as well as competing in intra-school competitions. Year 6 children, who have trained to become Young Sports Leaders, run a multi sports and athletics tournament for the children in KS1 and Foundation Stage, and help with a range of other competitions throughout the fortnight and summer term.  Students from a local secondary school help to organise events, and there is a KS2 athletics competition. We also run an annual sports day where families are invited to spectate.

PE is enhanced further by after-school clubs. These have recently included Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics, Multi Sports, Martial Arts and Tag-Rugby.  We provide a range of sports equipment that can be used at breaks and lunchtimes to encourage physical activity and provide children with an opportunity to independently practise the skills they have learnt in lessons.

Our school has earned the School Games Gold Award.
